How to Think About It
Think of it as a two-step zoom-out. 不仅仅是 lets the reader keep the everyday label they were already holding, then 更是 (or 更像是) lifts them to a bigger frame. The doubled 仅 in 不仅仅 isn't a typo — it's there for emphasis, like English 'not just merely.' Without that doubled 仅, the upgrade lands softer; with it, you hear the writer insisting the surface reading isn't enough.

Common Mistake
Learners pair 不仅仅是 with 而且 or 也, copying the simpler 不仅……而且…… pattern. Here the second half needs 更是 or 更像是 to deliver the upgrade — 而且 only adds, it doesn't elevate.

Don't Confuse With
不仅……而且……
Adds a second fact on the same level ('not only A, but also B'). 不仅仅是……更是…… elevates instead of adding.
与其说……不如说……
Replaces the first reading with the second ('rather than saying A, say B'). 不仅仅是……更是…… keeps both — A is true, but B is more true.
不仅仅是……
Standalone version means 'not merely A,' often without the upgrade clause. Add 更是 only when you want to deliver the bigger reframe.
