并非/不是……而是……
Reach for this when you want to correct a likely assumption and replace it with the real explanation — 'not X, but rather Y.' It's the standard rhetorical move in essays, op-eds, and analytical news: shoot down the obvious interpretation, then state the deeper one. 并非 is the formal sibling of 不是; pair either with 而是 to introduce the correction. Common in commentary, business writing, and any context that needs to look authoritative.

How to Think About It
Think of this as a courtroom move: you put the popular but wrong reading on the stand, dismiss it with 并非/不是, and then call the real witness with 而是. The 而 isn't 'and' here — it's a pivot, marking the contrast. Skip 而是 and the listener is left with only a negation, hanging without the correction; both halves are required for the rhetorical hit.

Common Mistake
Learners drop 而是 and just chain 不是 with a second clause, leaving the correction without its pivot. Spoken Chinese tolerates 不是...是..., but written Chinese needs 而是 to make the contrast click.

Don't Confuse With
不是...就是...
不是...就是... lists two possibilities ('either A or B'), not a correction. 不是...而是... rejects A and asserts B.
虽然...但是...
虽然...但是... concedes A and still asserts B (both true). 不是...而是... outright denies A in favor of B.
并不是...，而是...
Same pattern with extra emphasis from 并 — 'absolutely not... but rather...' Pick 并 when you want to make the rejection sound firmer.
