到底 (dàodǐ) — 'on earth / exactly / after all'
Reach for 到底 when you are pressing for a real answer or stating a final verdict. In questions, it adds urgency: 'what on earth, who exactly, what's really going on?' In statements, it caps a discussion: 'in the end, when all is said and done, X.' It is a tone-loaded adverb that signals the speaker is done dancing around the topic and wants to land somewhere.
Structure
[SUBJECT] 到底 + [VERB/QUESTION] / 到底 [STATEMENT]

How to Think About It
到底 literally means 'reach the bottom' — the speaker wants to get to the bottom of something. In questions, that bottom is the truth: 你到底想做什么? = 'what is it you really want to do?' In statements, the bottom is the final reality after stripping context away: 他到底是新手。 = 'when it comes down to it, he's a beginner.' Same word, two registers; the question form is more common in spoken Chinese, the statement form leans formal.
Examples
你到底想说什么?
nǐ dàodǐ xiǎng shuō shénme?
What is it you actually want to say?
这件事到底是谁的错?
zhè jiàn shì dàodǐ shì shéi de cuò?
Whose fault is this, really?
他到底是个孩子,不能要求太多。
tā dàodǐ shì gè háizi, bù néng yāoqiú tài duō.
After all, he's just a kid — you can't ask too much of him.
Common Mistake
Learners pair 到底 with 吗 to make a question, but 到底 only works with content questions (what / who / why / when / how) or A不A questions — never with 吗 yes/no questions. The job of 到底 is to demand specifics; 吗 only asks for yes/no, so the two clash.
你到底喜欢这部电影吗?
你到底喜不喜欢这部电影?
Don't Confuse With
究竟
More formal synonym, common in news and writing. 究竟 carries the same 'get to the bottom' feel but reads bookish. Use 到底 in speech, 究竟 in essays.
最后
Sequential 'finally / at last.' Use 最后 for events that come last in a series; 到底 caps the truth of the matter, not the timeline.
毕竟
'After all' as a reason marker — invokes a known fact to justify (毕竟他是新人). 到底 demands or delivers the truth; 毕竟 reminds you of an existing one.
