Reach for this when you want to compare one thing to another — 'X is like Y / acts the same as Y.' 他像他爸爸一样高. (He's as tall as his dad.) Use it for similes ('hair like silk'), comparisons ('cold like winter'), and behaviors ('works like a machine'). The 像 sets up what you're comparing to; 一样 closes the loop and says 'same.'

How to Think About It
Both 像 and 一样 are doing work — 像 introduces the comparison, 一样 collapses any difference. Dropping 一样 weakens the sentence to 'X resembles Y' (it's similar, sort of). Keeping it asserts 'they match in this respect.' The quality being matched usually comes AFTER 一样 (像他一样聪明), not before. Putting the adjective in front ('聪明像他一样') breaks the rhythm.

Common Mistake
Learners drop 一样 because they think 像 alone means 'like.' But 像 alone is weaker and more open-ended. To make a sharp comparison ('exactly like X in this way'), you need both 像 and 一样 bracketing the comparison.

Don't Confuse With
好像
好像 = 'seems like / it's as if' — used for IMPRESSIONS or guesses ('it seems like rain'). 像...一样 makes a direct comparison between two specific things ('like rain'). If you're hedging, use 好像; if you're comparing, use 像...一样.
跟...一样
Same meaning, slightly different feel. 跟 X 一样 stresses EQUALITY ('the same as X'); 像 X 一样 stresses RESEMBLANCE ('like X'). For equality of facts ('we're the same age'): use 跟. For descriptive similes ('quiet as a mouse'): use 像.
A 比 B 更...
比 is for showing one thing exceeds another ('A is taller than B'). 像...一样 is for showing two things MATCH. Opposite operations — don't confuse the direction.
像...一样
Same shape, weaker. Drop 就 when the comparison is mild or descriptive. Add 就 for stronger 'exactly like.'
好像
好像 = 'seems like' (uncertainty). 就像...一样 = 'is exactly like' (assertion). Don't mix uncertainty with this pattern.
