比...更...
Reach for 比...更... when you're comparing two things and you want to stack one above the other on the same quality scale. 比 introduces the thing being beaten; 更 pushes the adjective past the comparison line — 'even more X than that.' It's the upgrade of plain 比...A... because 更 explicitly says the second thing is further along the scale, not just different.
Structure
[A] 比 [B] 更 [ADJ]
[A] bǐ [B] gèng [ADJ]
How to Think About It
比 sets up the matchup, 更 announces the winner by margin. Without 更, 比 still works (他比我高 = he's taller than me), but adding 更 implies both are already at the high end of the scale and one is pushing further — 'he's even taller than me, and I'm already tall.' That's why 更 implies a shared baseline; both items already share the quality.
Examples
今年的冬天比去年更冷。
Jīnnián de dōngtiān bǐ qùnián gèng lěng.
This winter is even colder than last year.
他做的菜比我妈妈做的更好吃。
Tā zuò de cài bǐ wǒ māma zuò de gèng hǎochī.
The dishes he makes are even tastier than my mom's.
高铁比飞机更方便。
Gāotiě bǐ fēijī gèng fāngbiàn.
High-speed rail is even more convenient than flying.
Common Mistake
Learners pair 比 with 很 ('very') the way English uses 'much taller.' But 很 + adj never works after 比 — Chinese uses 更, 还, or a measure phrase (高一点儿) instead.
他比我很高。
他比我更高。
Don't Confuse With
A 比 B [ADJ]
Basic comparison without 更. Use it when the second item just has more of the quality, not when both are already high on the scale.
A 没有 B 那么 [ADJ]
Negative comparison ('A is not as X as B'). Use this when you want to deny the comparison rather than confirm it.
A 比 B 还 [ADJ]
Stronger than 更, often with a touch of surprise ('A is even more X — to a striking degree'). Use 更 for neutral comparisons, 还 when the gap is unexpected.
