光是...,就...
Reach for 光是...就... when you want to dramatize a number or a fact: name one limited slice of the picture, and then show how big the result already is from JUST that slice. It is the speaker's way of saying 'and that's not even counting everything else.' Common in news commentary, business analysis, and any sentence where a big statistic deserves an extra punch — '光是去年一年, 我们就花了五千万.'
Structure
光是 [LIMITED SCOPE] ,就 [BIG RESULT]
guāng shì... jiù...
How to Think About It
光 here means 'just/only,' but the rhetorical work happens in the gap between 光是 and 就. 光是 shrinks the scope down to one factor; 就 then plants a result that feels surprisingly large for such a narrow input. The unspoken message is always 'imagine the total.' Drop the 就 and the punch disappears — the sentence sounds like a flat description.
Examples
光是这一个项目,就花了三年时间。
Guāng shì zhè yī gè xiàngmù, jiù huā le sān nián shíjiān.
Just this one project alone took three years.
光是上海,就有两千多万人。
Guāng shì Shànghǎi, jiù yǒu liǎng qiān duō wàn rén.
Just Shanghai alone has over twenty million people.
光是机票,就要五千块。
Guāng shì jīpiào, jiù yào wǔ qiān kuài.
Just the plane ticket alone costs five thousand kuai.
Common Mistake
Learners use 光是 alone, the way English uses 'just,' and forget the 就 in the second clause. Without 就, the contrast between small scope and big consequence collapses and the sentence reads as a neutral fact.
光是这两家公司占了一半的市场。
光是这两家公司,就占了一半的市场。
Don't Confuse With
只是...
只是 just means 'only / merely' without the 'and yet look how big' kicker. Use 只是 to limit and downplay; use 光是...就... to limit AND amplify.
仅仅...就...
Same logic, more written/formal register. 仅仅...就... fits essays, reports, and news; 光是...就... is the spoken everyday version.
连...都...
Use 连...都... when even an extreme/unlikely case shows the result ('even X does Y'). 光是...就... is about one narrow chunk already producing a big number, not about extreme examples.
