Emphatic structures
Reach for these when you want to put a spotlight on one specific element of the sentence — the WHO, the WHEN, the WHERE, the HOW. Chinese builds emphasis through frames like 是...的 (focuses on time/place/manner/agent of a past action), 连...都/也 ('even X'), 就是 ('it's exactly that'), and fronted topics. Unlike English, which uses stress and word order alone, Chinese uses structural markers to flag what matters. Common in spoken explanation, news, debates, and any context where you need to highlight one detail.
Structure
Varies: 是 + [emphasized element] + 的; 连 + Element + 都/也 + Verb; 就是 + Element; (Topic), Subject + Verb.
shì... de; lián... dōu / yě; jiù shì
How to Think About It
Think of these as the highlighter pens of Chinese. 是...的 highlights the circumstance of a known past action ('it was YESTERDAY that he came'). 连...都/也 highlights the unlikely candidate ('even the teacher didn't know'). 就是 highlights identity or insistence ('it's exactly this one'). Fronting a topic spotlights the subject by moving it to the front. English would change tone of voice; Chinese changes structure.
Examples
我是昨天到的北京。
Wǒ shì zuótiān dào de Běijīng.
It was yesterday that I arrived in Beijing.
连小孩子都知道这个故事。
Lián xiǎo háizi dōu zhīdào zhège gùshi.
Even small children know this story.
我要的就是这个。
Wǒ yào de jiù shì zhège.
This is exactly what I want.
这本书,我看了三遍。
Zhè běn shū, wǒ kàn le sān biàn.
This book — I've read it three times.
Common Mistake
Learners use 是...的 when describing a future or hypothetical action. The 是...的 frame only emphasizes circumstances of an action the listener already knows happened. For future actions, just use plain word order.
我明天是坐飞机去的。
我明天坐飞机去。
Don't Confuse With
是...的 vs 了
了 reports that something happened; 是...的 highlights HOW or WHEN it happened among known facts. 我去北京了 ('I went to Beijing') vs 我是昨天去北京的 ('it was yesterday that I went to Beijing').
连...都/也
Specifically marks the surprising or extreme case ('even X did Y'). Use when the listener should be shocked or impressed; not for general emphasis.
就是...
Insists on identity or location ('THIS is the one'). Use when contrasting against other options the listener might be considering.
