非...而是...
Reach for 非……而是…… when you want to deny one description and replace it with a more accurate one. 非 strikes out the wrong reading; 而是 introduces what's actually true. It's the formal, slightly literary cousin of 不是……而是…… — common in commentary, biographical writing, and analytical prose. The two halves should be in direct contrast: the wrong label vs. the right one.

How to Think About It
Picture a 'correction stamp' that comes in two halves: 非 says 'cross this out', 而是 says 'write this instead'. Both halves should be describing the same subject and the same dimension — if you change topics between halves, the contrast falls apart. 非 alone (without 而是) survives in fixed expressions like 非礼勿视, but in modern prose, expect the 而是 partner.

Common Mistake
Learners write 非……是…… or 非……而…… without the 是 in the second half. Modern Chinese expects the full 而是 to introduce the corrected claim — dropping the 是 leaves the second half hanging like a sentence fragment.
他非自己解决，而其他人帮他。
他并非独自解决，而是有人在背后帮他。
Don't Confuse With
不是……而是……
Identical meaning, everyday register. Use it in speech and casual writing; reserve 非……而是…… for essays, news, or self-consciously literary prose.
并非……
Standalone formal negation ('it is not the case that…'). Doesn't require a 而是 follow-up — useful when you just want to deny a claim without offering a replacement.
并不是……而是……
A middle register — slightly more formal than 不是……而是…… but less stiff than 非……而是……. Good for spoken commentary that wants a little weight.
