反而
Reach for 反而 when the outcome is the OPPOSITE of what anyone would have expected — 'instead,' 'on the contrary,' 'unexpectedly the reverse.' It signals a twist: you'd think X would happen, but actually Y did. Place it before the verb in the surprising clause, usually after the expected setup. Common when describing counterproductive efforts, ironic outcomes, and any situation where pressure produces the opposite of its intent.
Structure
[EXPECTED_SETUP], [SUBJECT] 反而 [UNEXPECTED_RESULT]
...fǎn'ér...
How to Think About It
反而 needs a backdrop of expectation to push against. The first clause sets up what should have happened (or what was attempted); 反而 introduces the reverse. Used alone without that backdrop, 反而 sounds disconnected. Compare 但是 (a simple contrast) with 反而 (a backwards-from-expectation contrast). Pressing harder doesn't help, 反而 makes it worse — that's the move.
Examples
他吃了药, 病反而更重了。
Tā chī le yào, bìng fǎn'ér gèng zhòng le.
He took the medicine, but his illness got worse.
我跟他解释了, 他反而更生气。
Wǒ gēn tā jiěshì le, tā fǎn'ér gèng shēngqì.
I explained to him, and instead he got even angrier.
下了大雨, 路上的车反而更多了。
Xià le dà yǔ, lù shàng de chē fǎn'ér gèng duō le.
It rained heavily, and surprisingly there were even more cars on the road.
Common Mistake
Learners use 反而 like 但是 to mean just 'but' or 'however.' 反而 requires the second clause to be the OPPOSITE of what the first clause led you to expect, not merely different.
他很饿, 反而不想吃饭。 (acceptable, but needs context)
他吃了一碗饭, 反而更饿了。
Don't Confuse With
但是
但是 marks any contrast. 反而 specifically marks a result OPPOSITE of expected. 'I ate but I'm still hungry' = 但是; 'I ate and now I'm hungrier' = 反而.
却
却 also marks something unexpected, but it's more about contrast than reversal. Use 反而 when the result actively reverses the expected direction; 却 for milder surprise.
结果
结果 just announces 'the result was...' neutrally. 反而 adds the layer of 'and this is the OPPOSITE of what you'd expect.'
