X 把 + Object + Verb + Result
Reach for 把 when you want to spotlight what happens TO a specific object — you took it, moved it, broke it, changed it, finished it. Chinese normally goes Subject-Verb-Object, but 把 yanks the object in front of the verb so the listener locks onto it before the action lands. It is the disposal sentence: someone deliberately did something to a known thing, and the sentence ends with a clear result, not a bare verb.
Structure
[SUBJECT] 把 [OBJECT] [VERB] [RESULT]
bǎ [OBJECT] [VERB]...
How to Think About It
把 is a spotlight, not a verb. It picks up the object and slides it in front of the action, telling the listener 'pay attention — this specific thing is about to get done to.' Because of that spotlight, the verb can't sit there naked: you owe the listener a result, complement, or quantity (完, 好, 在桌上, 一遍). A 把 sentence with a bare verb feels chopped off, like the speaker started a sentence and walked away.
Examples
他把门关上了。
Tā bǎ mén guānshàng le.
He closed the door.
请把这本书放在桌子上。
Qǐng bǎ zhè běn shū fàng zài zhuōzi shàng.
Please put this book on the table.
我把咖啡喝完了。
Wǒ bǎ kāfēi hē wán le.
I finished the coffee.
Common Mistake
Learners drop the result complement and leave the verb naked, because in English 'I put the book' would just need a location to feel done. In Chinese 把 demands an explicit landing — a complement, a location, a quantity, or 了 plus more material.
我把书放。
我把书放在桌子上。
Don't Confuse With
被
被 is the passive opposite — the object becomes subject and gets acted on by someone. Use 被 when you want to highlight the victim ('我的手机被偷了'); use 把 when you want to highlight the doer disposing of the object.
将...
Same grammar, formal/written register. 将 belongs in news headlines, contracts, and speeches; 把 owns spoken Chinese and casual writing.
Subject + Verb + Object
Default word order. Use plain SVO when the object is new information or you're describing the action generally. Switch to 把 only when the object is specific/known and you care about the result on it.
