X 不是 ... 而是 / 是 ...
Reach for this when you want to correct a frame — 'it's not X, it's actually Y.' 不是...而是... is the high-leverage rhetorical move in Chinese: knock down a wrong assumption, then plant the right one. Use it to reframe stereotypes ('they're not lazy, they're exhausted'), to redefine a trend ('it's not a hobby, it's therapy'), and to push back politely in conversation. The 而是 version is the standard written form; in speech people often drop 而 and just say 不是...是...
Structure
[SUBJECT] 不是 [WRONG], 而是 [RIGHT]
... búshì ..., érshì ...
How to Think About It
Think of it as a one-two punch with structural symmetry. 不是 negates frame A; 而是 (literally 'but is') plants frame B in exactly the same grammatical slot. Both halves should be parallel — same kind of phrase, same length where possible. The 而 in 而是 is a contrast marker stronger than a comma; dropping it (...不是 X, 是 Y) makes the contrast softer and more conversational.
Examples
他不是不想做事, 而是太累了。
Tā búshì bù xiǎng zuòshì, érshì tài lèi le.
It's not that he doesn't want to work — he's just exhausted.
拼豆在他们眼里不是手工, 而是一种心理护肤。
Pīn dòu zài tāmen yǎn lǐ búshì shǒugōng, érshì yì zhǒng xīnlǐ hùfū.
In their eyes, perler beads aren't a craft — they're a kind of mental skincare.
这不是结束, 而是开始。
Zhè búshì jiéshù, érshì kāishǐ.
This isn't an ending — it's a beginning.
Common Mistake
Learners use 但是 (but) instead of 而是, leading to '...不是 X, 但是 Y.' That construction means 'not X, but [still] Y' — implying Y exists alongside or despite X, not replacing it. 而是 specifically means 'rather, it IS Y.' Mixing them blurs the correction.
他不是不想做事, 但是他太累了。
他不是不想做事, 而是他太累了。
Don't Confuse With
不只是 ... 也是 ...
'Not only X but also Y' — adds, doesn't replace. Use 不只是...也是... when both X and Y are true; use 不是...而是... when X is wrong and Y is the correction.
不是 ... 就是 ...
'If not X, then Y' — presents two possibilities. Use this for either/or scenarios ('要么 X 要么 Y' style); use 不是...而是... for negate-and-correct.
其实 + clause
'Actually...' — softer correction. Use 其实 when you want to slide in a correction politely; use 不是...而是... when you want a clean, parallel reframe.
