Reach for this when you're weighing two possibilities and aren't ready to commit to either — 'maybe X, maybe Y.' It's how Chinese lays out a soft fork in the road: two guesses, both plausible, neither confirmed. Use it for speculation about other people's behavior ('maybe he forgot, maybe he's busy'), uncertain futures ('maybe it'll rain, maybe it won't'), or hedged opinions. Neutral register — works in conversation, journaling, and writing. Slightly more thoughtful-sounding than a single 也许.

How to Think About It
也许 alone means 'maybe.' Doubling it creates a balance beam — two outcomes weighed against each other with equal uncertainty. English does the same thing with 'maybe... maybe...' or 'perhaps... or perhaps...' The pattern signals that the speaker has considered both options and is genuinely undecided, not just throwing out one wild guess. Swap in 可能...可能... for a slightly more neutral feel; 也许 leans a touch softer and more reflective.
Examples
Yěxǔ tā wàng le, yěxǔ tā hái zài lùshang.
Maybe he forgot, maybe he's still on his way.
Yěxǔ míngtiān huì xià yǔ, yěxǔ huì chū tàiyáng, shéi zhīdào ne?
Maybe it'll rain tomorrow, maybe it'll be sunny — who knows?
Yěxǔ wǒ yīnggāi qù, yěxǔ wǒ yīnggāi liú xiàlái.
Maybe I should go, maybe I should stay.
Yěxǔ tā bù xǐhuān zhè fèn gōngzuò, yěxǔ tā zhǐshì tài lèi le.
Maybe she doesn't like the job, or maybe she's just too tired.
Common Mistake
Learners pair 也许 with 或者 because English uses 'or' between alternatives. Chinese doesn't need it — the repeated 也许 already presents both options. Stacking 或者 inside is redundant.
Don't Confuse With
Means the same thing — 'maybe X, maybe Y.' 可能 is slightly more neutral and analytic; 也许 has a more reflective, almost poetic feel. Interchangeable in most cases.
'Either... or...' — presents alternatives as choices, not guesses. Use it when offering options ('we can eat either Chinese or Japanese'), not when speculating about unknown facts.
是...还是...
Question form: 'is it X or Y?' Used when actively asking for a decision. 也许...也许... stays in speculation mode without inviting an answer.
