只要……,(就)……
Reach for this when one simple condition is enough to guarantee the result — 'as long as X, then Y.' It is the optimistic conditional: meet the bar in the first clause and the second clause is yours. Common in motivational speech, coaching, and any pitch where you want to make the path forward sound clear: as long as you work hard, as long as you keep trying, success is possible.
Structure
只要 [SUFFICIENT CONDITION] 就 [GUARANTEED RESULT]
zhǐyào... jiù...
How to Think About It
只要 marks a SUFFICIENT condition — meeting it is enough, even if it isn't the only way. Compare with 只有 ('only if'), which marks a NECESSARY condition where nothing else will do. With 只要, the bar is low and the door is open; with 只有, the bar is the only door. The 就 in the second half is the payoff lever — it cashes in the condition.
Examples
只要你努力, 就一定会成功。
Zhǐyào nǐ nǔlì, jiù yídìng huì chénggōng.
As long as you work hard, you'll definitely succeed.
只要不下雨, 我们就去爬山。
Zhǐyào bú xià yǔ, wǒmen jiù qù páshān.
As long as it doesn't rain, we'll go hiking.
只要有梦想, 一切都是可能的。
Zhǐyào yǒu mèngxiǎng, yíqiè dōu shì kěnéng de.
As long as you have a dream, anything is possible.
Common Mistake
Learners swap 只要 and 只有 because both translate as 'only.' But they are opposites in logic: 只要 = sufficient ('this is enough'), 只有 = necessary ('this is the only way'). Saying 只有你努力,你就会成功 implies effort is the SOLE path; 只要 is the encouraging version.
只有你努力工作, 一切都是可能的。
只要你努力工作, 一切都是可能的。
Don't Confuse With
只有……才……
Opposite logic — necessary condition, not sufficient. 'Only if you study hard CAN you pass.' Use 只有...才... when no other path works; use 只要...就... when this is enough.
如果……就……
Neutral 'if...then.' 只要 adds the flavor of 'meeting this bar is all it takes.' 如果 just describes a hypothetical without claiming it is sufficient.
无论……都……
'No matter what...still...' — the result holds regardless of the condition. 只要 says ONE condition unlocks the result; 无论 says NO condition can block it.
