只有...才能... (zhǐyǒu...cái néng...) — 'only if...then can...'
Use this when you want to claim that the second action is impossible WITHOUT the first one. It is the Chinese way to mark a necessary condition: 'only if X happens can Y happen.' Common in argumentation, advice, and persuasive writing. The 才 is what makes the condition feel non-negotiable — drop it and the necessity disappears.

How to Think About It
只有...才能... is exclusive necessity. 只有 names the ONE path that makes the result possible; 才 emphasizes that nothing else qualifies. Compare with 只要...就... (sufficient condition: 'as long as X, Y will happen') — same shape, opposite logic. 只有...才... bars all other paths; 只要...就... opens any path that meets a minimum. Mixing them up changes a strict claim into a loose one and vice versa.

Common Mistake
Learners swap 才能 for 就能, producing '只有努力就能成功' — but that confuses necessity with sufficiency. 只有 demands 才, never 就. The pair is locked: 只有...才..., 只要...就....

只要...就...
Sufficient condition — 'as long as X, Y.' Use when ANY path that meets the minimum will do (只要努力就有机会). 只有...才... rules out all other paths.
除非...否则...
Negative framing — 'unless X, otherwise NOT Y.' Same logic as 只有...才..., but stated by exception. 只有 says 'this is the only way'; 除非 says 'without this, no way.'

Drop 才能 and you get a different meaning: 'only X' as a quantity (只有三个人 = only three people). The condition reading requires the matching 才.
