呢 (ne) is a sentence-final particle with no direct English translation — it's a sound that does grammatical work.
Its main HSK 1 job is the 'bounce-back' question: after someone tells you something, you ask them the same thing about you, or about a new topic, by adding 呢. So 'I'm fine, and you?' becomes 我很好，你呢？ — literally 'I'm good, you ne?' This is the most common use and the one beginners need first.
呢 has two other functions: (1) it softens a wh-question, making it sound more curious or thoughtful — 他在哪儿呢？ ('where IS he?' with a wondering tone) — and (2) it marks an ongoing state, often with 在 — 他在睡觉呢 ('he's sleeping right now'). 呢 is always toneless (neutral tone) and only appears at the end of a sentence.

吗 = yes/no question marker. 呢 = topic-bounce / softening particle. 你好吗 ('are you well?') is a yes/no question; 你呢 ('and you?') asks the listener about themselves. Mixing them is the #1 particle error at HSK 1.
啊 is an exclamation / softening particle that adds emotion ('oh,' 'ah'). 呢 specifically signals continuation or a wondering question. 真好啊 = 'wow, that's great'; 真好呢 sounds odd.
嘛 (ma, neutral tone) expresses 'obviously' or 'come on' — a different particle entirely. Don't confuse it with 呢.
