红 (hóng) is the color 'red' — but in Chinese culture it carries weight English 'red' doesn't.
Red is the color of luck, celebration, and weddings: brides traditionally wear red, 红包 (hóngbāo) are the red envelopes of cash given at New Year and weddings, and shop signs use red to attract customers. Two related extended meanings: (1) 'popular / famous' — 他最近很红 ('he's really popular lately'), 网红 (wǎnghóng) means an internet celebrity; (2) historical/political — the Chinese flag is 红旗 (red flag), and 红色 has Communist-era resonance in compounds like 红军 (Red Army).
Grammatically, 红 modifies nouns directly (红花 red flower, 红车 red car) or pairs with 色 to form the noun 红色 ('the color red') for more formal use. Compare with 黑 ('black'), 白 ('white'), 蓝 ('blue') — same color-adjective pattern.

朱 ('vermilion / cinnabar red') is a literary word for a specific bright red, used in classical writing and surnames. 红 is the everyday word.
Đừng nhầm 红 với
虹 ('rainbow') sounds identical but uses the 虫 (insect) radical and only appears in 彩虹 (rainbow). 红 = red; 虹 = rainbow — same sound, different chars.
宏 ('grand / vast,' as in 宏大 hóngdà) sounds the same as 红 and is also second tone. Different characters, no overlap in meaning.
