附近 (fùjìn) is a noun meaning 'the area nearby / the vicinity.'
It functions like a place word and most often appears in two patterns: (1) X 附近 ('near X') — 学校附近 'near the school'; (2) 在附近 ('in the area / around here') — 我家就在附近 'my place is right around here.' It can also act as the object of 有 ('there is') — 附近有一家咖啡店 'there's a coffee shop nearby.' Unlike English 'nearby,' which is usually an adverb or adjective, 附近 is a noun, so it slots into sentences as a location.
The opposite is 远 (yuǎn, 'far'). 附近 typically implies walking distance or a short ride — close enough to be considered the same neighborhood.
