除了……，还……
Reach for this when you want to add another item to a list — 'besides X, there's also Y.' 除了 names what's already on the table; 还 adds something extra on top. Note the contrast with 除了...都...: with 还, the first thing is INCLUDED; with 都, the first thing is EXCLUDED. Everyday register — common in speech, lists, recommendations ('besides Beijing, you should also visit Xi'an'), and writing where you're piling on extras.

How to Think About It
When 除了 pairs with 还, think 'X plus Y' — both are included. When 除了 pairs with 都, think 'everyone except X' — X is excluded. Same word, opposite logic depending on the partner. The 还 version is the more common one in speech; the 都 version is more often used to describe exceptions in a group. Picking the wrong partner flips the meaning of your sentence.

除了周末，我平时还要加班。

Common Mistake
Learners use 也 instead of 还 in the second clause. 也 is softer ('also'), and the pairing 除了...也... sounds incomplete in Chinese. 还 has the 'in addition / on top of' force that the structure needs. Use 还 by default; 也 only works in specific narrow contexts.

Don't Confuse With
除了...都...
'Everyone/everything EXCEPT X' — X is excluded from the set. 除了他，大家都来了 = everyone came except him. Opposite logic from 除了...还..., which INCLUDES X.
不但...而且...
'Not only X but also Y' — emphasizes that Y is surprising or notable on top of X. 除了...还... just lists; 不但...而且... ranks Y as additional impact.
另外
'In addition / furthermore' — a standalone connector between sentences. 除了...还... is a single integrated structure within one sentence.
