在 + Place
Reach for this when you want to say where someone or something IS — 'he's at the office,' 'the cat is on the bed.' 在 is doing double duty as both the verb 'to be (located)' and the preposition 'at/in/on.' This bare 在 + place version stands as a complete sentence on its own; no other verb is needed because 在 already carries the meaning of 'being there.'

How to Think About It
在 here is a full verb, not a helper. English needs 'is + at' (two pieces); Chinese collapses them into one. That's why 小明在公司 stands alone as a complete sentence — adding 是 in front ('小明是在公司') breaks it, because 在 already does the 'being' part. Think of 在 + place as a self-contained little stamp that pins the subject to a spot.
Examples
小明在公司。
Xiǎomíng zài gōngsī.
Xiao Ming is at the office.
我的手机在桌子上。
Wǒ de shǒujī zài zhuōzi shàng.
My phone is on the table.
妈妈在哪里?
Māma zài nǎlǐ?
Where is mom?
Common Mistake
Learners assume Chinese needs 是 like English needs 'is,' and produce 我是在家. That extra 是 only appears as emphasis ('I AM at home, [not somewhere else]'); for a plain statement, drop it.
我是在家。
我在家。
Don't Confuse With
在 + Place + Verb
Add a verb after the place and 在 shifts to preposition ('at'): 在家看电视 = watch TV at home. Bare 在 + place = just location.
正在 + Verb
正在 means 'in the middle of doing' — it's about ongoing action, not location.
有 + Place + Noun
Use 有 when announcing 'there is X at Y' (house has a cat); 在 when starting from a known subject and pinning its location.
