既然...也...
Reach for this when you want to draw a conclusion from a fact already on the table — 'since X is the case, then Y.' Use 既然 to flag the established premise (often something the listener already knows), and 也 or 就 to deliver the natural consequence. Common in spoken reasoning ('since you're already here, you might as well stay'), advice, and any situation where you're nudging someone toward an obvious next step. Slightly persuasive in tone — you're using the premise as leverage.
Structure
既然 + Premise clause, Subject + 也/就 + Consequence clause
jì rán... yě...
How to Think About It
既然 packages a fact as 'given that we both already know this.' The follow-up 也/就 says 'then the natural move is...' It's different from 因为 ('because'), which introduces new reasons. 既然 doesn't introduce — it acknowledges. Picture a conversation where one side says 'fine, since X is settled, let's just do Y.' That 'since' is exactly 既然.
Examples
Jìrán nǐ bù shūfu, yě bié qù shàngbān le.
Since you're not feeling well, you might as well not go to work.
Jìrán dàjiā dōu tóngyì le, wǒmen yě jiù zhème juédìng ba.
Since everyone agrees, let's go ahead and decide it this way.
Jìrán tā bù xiǎng qù, nà wǒ yě bù miǎnqiǎng tā.
Since he doesn't want to go, I won't force him either.
Jìrán shìqing yǐjīng fāshēng le, wǒmen yě zhǐ néng miànduì.
Since it's already happened, we can only face it.
Common Mistake
Learners use 因为 ('because') where 既然 belongs. 因为 explains a cause the listener may not know; 既然 builds on a fact already accepted. Swapping them turns a piece of reasoning ('since you've already paid, you might as well use it') into a stiff causal explanation.
Don't Confuse With
因为...所以...
Introduces a cause the listener may not yet know. 既然...也/就... assumes the premise is already shared and draws a follow-up move. Use 因为 for explanation; 既然 for nudging.
既然...就...
The more common pairing — 就 is the default 'then.' 也 is used when the consequence parallels another option or adds a 'might as well' flavor. They overlap, but 就 is tighter logically.
如果...就...
'If X, then Y' — the premise is hypothetical. 既然 treats the premise as a fact already true. Don't use 如果 to talk about something that's already happened.
