把
Reach for 把 when you want to spotlight what happens TO an object — and there has to be a specific, identifiable object plus a clear result. '我把杯子打破了' (I broke the cup) puts the cup center-stage and tells you exactly what became of it. Without 把, '我打破了杯子' is fine but feels more incidental. Use 把 for deliberate handling, moving, finishing, breaking, opening, fixing — actions with a definite effect on a definite thing.
Structure
[SUBJECT] 把 [OBJECT] [VERB] [RESULT/COMPLEMENT]
bǎ [OBJECT] [VERB]
How to Think About It
把 is a spotlight, not a verb. It grabs the object out of its normal post-verb slot and moves it in FRONT of the verb so the listener watches the object the whole time. Because the spotlight needs something to land on, the verb almost always carries an extra piece: 了, a result complement (打破), a directional (拿走), 在/到 + location. A bare verb after 把 — '我把杯子拿' — sounds like a sentence cut in half.
Examples
请把窗户关上。
Qǐng bǎ chuānghu guān shàng.
Please close the window.
他把钱包丢了。
Tā bǎ qiánbāo diū le.
He lost his wallet.
我把作业写完了。
Wǒ bǎ zuòyè xiě wán le.
I finished my homework.
Common Mistake
Learners use 把 with a bare verb and no result, or with an indefinite object. The verb after 把 needs a tail (了, 完, 在 + place, a result complement, etc.), and the object must be specific — 'a cup' won't do, it has to be 'the cup.'
我把一个苹果吃。
我把那个苹果吃了。
Don't Confuse With
被 + Agent + Verb
被 is the passive — subject is the receiver ('The cup was broken by me'). 把 is active — subject does it, object gets affected. They flip the camera angle on the same event.
Subject + Verb + Object (basic SVO)
Use plain SVO when the object isn't specific or the action's effect doesn't matter: '我吃苹果' (I eat apples). 把 forces a definite object plus a specific outcome.
给 + Recipient
给 marks who RECEIVES something. 把 marks what gets HANDLED. '我把书给他' uses both: 把 handles the book, 给 hands it to him.
