How to Think About It
Think of 与其...不如... as a one-sided seesaw: 与其 weighs down the option you're rejecting, 不如 lifts up the better choice. Both options must be real alternatives the same actor could take — you can't put a wish on one side and an action on the other. The recommendation always sits in the second half; the first half is what gets discarded.

Common Mistake
Learners reverse the slots, putting the preferred option after 与其 because it appears first in English ('I'd rather stay home'). In Chinese, the rejected option goes after 与其; the chosen one goes after 不如.

Don't Confuse With
宁可...也不...
宁可...也不... carries a stronger 'I'd rather suffer X than do Y' tone — personal willingness, even sacrifice. 与其...不如... is more neutral advice.

不是...而是... corrects a fact ('not A, but B'). 与其...不如... compares two valid choices and prefers one.
A 不如 B
Plain 不如 makes a quality comparison ('A isn't as good as B'). Add 与其 only when you're contrasting two courses of action.
