为了 + Purpose
Use 为了 at the start of a clause to state the goal behind an action — 'in order to,' 'for the sake of.' The purpose goes right after 为了; the action it serves comes in the main clause. Most natural when 为了 leads the sentence and the main clause follows, especially in writing, news, and any situation where you want to foreground why something is being done before saying what's being done.
Structure
为了 [PURPOSE], [MAIN CLAUSE]
wèile [PURPOSE]
How to Think About It
为了 frames the goal first and the action second, the opposite of casual English ('I went there to buy bread'). In Chinese, the purpose clause is the setup, the main clause is the payoff. 为了 also takes either a noun (为了健康) or a verb phrase (为了减肥) — both work. What it can't do is be followed by a full subject-verb clause with its own subject, because 为了 binds the purpose to the subject of the main clause.
Examples
为了考试,他每天复习三个小时。
Wèile kǎoshì, tā měitiān fùxí sān gè xiǎoshí.
In order to prepare for the exam, he reviews for three hours every day.
为了身体健康,我开始跑步了。
Wèile shēntǐ jiànkāng, wǒ kāishǐ pǎobù le.
For the sake of my health, I've started running.
为了见她,他坐了十个小时的火车。
Wèile jiàn tā, tā zuò le shí gè xiǎoshí de huǒchē.
In order to see her, he took a ten-hour train ride.
Common Mistake
Learners stick 为了 in the middle of a sentence to translate 'to do X' from English, but it sounds awkward there. 为了 prefers the front of the sentence; the action it serves goes after.
我去超市为了买东西。
为了买东西,我去了超市。
Don't Confuse With
因为...
因为 gives a cause that already exists; 为了 names a goal you haven't reached yet. 'Because it rained' vs 'in order to stay dry.'
为 + Person/Cause
为 alone (without 了) means 'for' someone or some cause — 为人民服务 (serve the people). 为了 specifically introduces a goal or purpose.
...是为了...
Flip the structure when you want the action first: 我去超市是为了买东西. Same meaning, different emphasis — the action is foregrounded.
