What does 新鲜 mean?
新鲜 (xīnxiān) is the adjective 'fresh.' Three main uses. First, fresh food — recently picked, caught, or made: 新鲜的水果 (fresh fruit), 新鲜的鱼 (fresh fish), 新鲜的牛奶 (fresh milk). Second, fresh air — clean and not stale: 新鲜空气 (fresh air), the canonical reason to open a window or go for a walk.
Third, novel or new (as an experience or idea): 这件事很新鲜 = 'this is a new/novel thing,' often spoken with a hint of curiosity. The colloquial 新鲜事 ('something new / fresh gossip') is everyday slang: 有什么新鲜事? = 'Any news / anything new?' Differences from English: 'fresh' in English can mean 'cheeky' (a fresh kid) — 新鲜 NEVER carries that sense. Also, for 'fresh laundry / fresh start,' Chinese uses different words (干净的衣服, 重新开始) — 新鲜 stays mostly with food, air, and novelty.

Memory hook: 新 (new) + 鲜 (fresh-tasting) — newly fresh, just-made/just-picked. 鲜 itself contains 鱼 (fish) + 羊 (sheep), the two foods that demanded freshness in ancient kitchens.
