其实

其实 (qíshí) is an adverb meaning 'actually,' 'in fact,' or 'as a matter of fact.' Speakers use it to introduce a truth that corrects, qualifies, or contrasts with what was just said or assumed. It typically sits at the beginning of the clause, before the subject or right after it: 其实我不饿 or 我其实不饿 ('actually I'm not hungry'). Two notes for English speakers: first, 其实 is softer and more conversational than English 'in fact' — it signals 'here's the real story' without sounding aggressive.

Second, don't confuse it with 实际上 (shíjì shàng, 'in actuality / practically speaking'), which is more formal and analytical. 其实 fits everyday speech; 实际上 fits written reports. Common opener: 其实我也不知道 ('honestly, I don't know either'). Useful to soften disagreement.
