后来
later; afterwards
hòulái
What does 后来 mean?
后来 (hòulái) is a time adverb meaning 'later' or 'afterwards,' but with a strict rule English speakers often miss: 后来 only refers to a time AFTER something in the PAST. You use it when telling a story — what happened next. 'I met him in 2010; 后来 we became friends.' For future 'later' ('I'll call you later'), you must use 以后 (yǐhòu) or 等会儿 (děng huìr), never 后来. This is the single most common error with this word.
后来 usually sits at the start of a clause, often paired with 就 (jiù) — '后来就...' (afterwards, then...). It is neutral in register, common in both speech and writing, and central to natural-sounding storytelling in Chinese.
Note: Used only for past events. For future 'later,' use 以后 (yǐhòu) instead — a common HSK 3 mistake.
Character breakdown
after; behind
to come
Memory hook: 后 (after) + 来 (come) = 'what came after' — the past-only 'afterwards.'

Synonyms
以后 is the all-purpose 'after / later,' works for past, present, or future. 后来 is past-only. 'I'll see you later' must be 以后见, never 后来见. When narrating past events, both can work but 后来 sounds more storyteller-natural.
之后 means 'after that' and follows a specific reference point (often after a noun or verb phrase). 后来 stands alone as 'and then later.' 吃饭之后 (after eating) — 之后, not 后来.
