The flavor is deliberate: 视为 implies considered judgment, not casual perception.

How to Think About It
视 means 'to regard' (literally 'to see') and 为 here is the classical 'as' — together 视为 is a fixed two-character verb that demands an object before it. The 把 in front does its usual job: flagging the thing being acted on. So 把 X 视为 Y reads as 'take X, mentally categorize it as Y.' You cannot drop the 把 in this construction without rearranging the sentence — 视为 needs its object placed up front.

Common Mistake
Learners write 视 alone or 视作 randomly and forget that 视为 is a single locked unit. Splitting it ('视他为朋友' technically exists in classical style but feels stilted in modern prose) or replacing 为 with 是 breaks the pattern.

Colloquial near-equivalent. Use 看成 in speech, 视为 in writing and analysis.

认为 just states an opinion ('I think X is Y'). 把……视为…… frames it as a deliberate way of regarding something, often institutionally or habitually.
