就算是X，也Y
Reach for this when you want to grant a hypothetical or generous reading and STILL push back — 'even if it's X, it's still Y.' 就算是 introduces a concession you're willing to make for the sake of argument; 也 delivers the consequence that holds despite that concession. Use it when defending a critical point ('even if it's a joke, it's still in poor taste') or when discounting a defense ('even if it's true, it doesn't matter'). The flavor is firm but not aggressive.

How to Think About It
就算 alone means 'even if' — a hypothetical concession. Adding 是 ('it's') tightens it to 'even if it IS X,' which is what makes the structure useful for evaluating someone's framing. The 也 in the second clause is non-negotiable: it carries the 'still / nonetheless' force. Drop 也 and the concession has nothing to push against. The whole construction lets you concede a point on the surface while standing firm on the conclusion underneath — a polite-sounding 'I hear you, but...'

Common Mistake
Learners pair 就算 with 但是 ('就算是X, 但是Y') because 'even if' feels like it should pair with 'but.' But Chinese pairs 就算 with 也 (or 还是), not 但是. Adding 但是 makes the sentence redundant; the concessive contrast is already carried by 就算...也.

Don't Confuse With
即使...也...
即使...也... is the formal/written equivalent of 就算...也... — same logic, different register. Use 就算 in speech and casual writing; reach for 即使 in essays and serious commentary.
虽然...但是...
虽然 concedes a FACT ('although it is true'). 就算 concedes a HYPOTHETICAL ('even if it were true'). Use 虽然 when you accept X as fact; use 就算 when you're granting it for the sake of argument.
哪怕...也...
哪怕 is a slightly more emphatic/literary 'even if' — stresses the extreme nature of the hypothetical. 就算 is the everyday version. Both pair with 也.
