Reach for this when you want to ask how much of something happened — usually after a change. 涨了多少？ = how much did it go up? 学了多少？ = how much have you learned? The 了 marks a completed change, and 多少 asks for the size of that change. Common in news (price rose how much?), conversation (how much did you eat?), and progress check-ins (how much have you finished?).

How to Think About It
Two pieces, two jobs. The 了 is the completion marker — it tells the listener you are not asking about a possibility, you are asking about something that already happened. 多少 is the quantity question word that works for any countable or measurable amount. Put them together and you get 'how much got [verb]-ed?' Where English splits this into different constructions (how much did it rise? how much have you eaten?), Chinese keeps one tidy frame.

Common Mistake
Learners use 几 instead of 多少 when the expected answer is large. 几 only asks for small numbers — usually under 10 — and pairs with a measure word (几个人?). For prices, percentages, weights, and any open-ended quantity, you need 多少, without a measure word.

几 + Measure + Noun?
For small countable items (几本书? = how many books?). Use 多少 when the answer could be large or is a price/percentage.
多少 + Noun?
Without 了 — asks about a current quantity, not a change (你有多少钱? = how much money do you have?). Add 了 when you want to ask about completed change.
...了吗？
Yes/no completion question (你吃了吗? = have you eaten?). ...了多少 asks for an amount, not a yes/no.
