Place + 有 + Object
Reach for this when you want to say something exists at a location — 'there is/are X at Y.' '桌子上有书.' Place comes first, 有 in the middle, and the existing thing at the end. This is one of the first patterns you learn in HSK 1, and you'll use it forever: there's coffee in the kitchen, there's a person at the door, there's a problem in this code.
Structure
[PLACE] 有 [OBJECT]
[PLACE] yǒu [OBJECT]
How to Think About It
Chinese reverses the English order. English says 'There is a book on the table' — existence first, location last. Chinese plants the location first ('on the table'), then announces what's there. Think of it as the camera panning to the place before the object appears. This is also why 有 in this pattern doesn't mean 'have' — the table doesn't own the book; the book just exists there.
Examples
桌子上有一本书。
Zhuōzi shàng yǒu yì běn shū.
There is a book on the table.
教室里有很多学生。
Jiàoshì lǐ yǒu hěn duō xuéshēng.
There are many students in the classroom.
我家附近有一个超市。
Wǒ jiā fùjìn yǒu yí ge chāoshì.
There is a supermarket near my house.
Common Mistake
Learners put the object first because English does. '一本书有在桌子上' looks reasonable to an English brain but is ungrammatical. The location always leads. Also: don't add 在 before the place — 'PLACE 有 OBJECT' is already complete.
一个人有在门口。
门口有一个人。
Don't Confuse With
Object + 在 + Place
Use 在 when the object is already known and you're saying WHERE it is ('The book is on the table' = '书在桌子上'). Use 有 when the object is new information being introduced ('There's a book on the table').
Place + 是 + Object
是 identifies what a place IS, not what's in it. '这是图书馆' = 'This is a library.' '图书馆有很多书' = 'There are a lot of books in the library.' Different jobs.
Person + 有 + Object
When the subject is a person/entity rather than a location, 有 means 'have/own': '我有一本书' = 'I have a book.' Same word, but ownership instead of existence.
