北方

北方 (běifāng) means 'the north' or 'the northern region.' It functions both as the compass direction (the north) and, more often in Chinese conversation, as a cultural region — 'northern China,' the area where people eat noodles and dumplings, speak with rolled-r 北方话, and endure harsh winters. Saying 我是北方人 ('I'm a northerner') immediately suggests Beijing, Shandong, Northeast China, or similar — not just 'I come from somewhere north.'

Two contrasts matter: first, 北方 differs from plain 北 (běi, 'north' as pure direction) — 往北走 ('go north') uses 北, not 北方. Second, English speakers often think of 'the north' as relative to the speaker, but in China 北方 has a fixed cultural reference: north of the Qinling-Huaihe line. The opposite is 南方 (nánfāng, the south).
