Subject + 要 + Verb
Reach for 要 + Verb to express two everyday meanings: 'want to' (I want to buy that) and 'going to / have to' (I'm going to Beijing, you need to study). The exact reading depends on context — sometimes both apply at once. 要 sits directly before the main verb and works across HSK 1 sentences about plans, desires, and obligations. Negate the 'want to' meaning with 不想 (didn't want); negate the 'have to' meaning with 不用 or 不必 (don't need to). Plain 不要 means 'don't!' as a command.
Structure
[SUBJECT] 要 [VERB] ([OBJECT])

How to Think About It
要 carries forward energy — desire, plan, or obligation pointing the speaker toward an action. Think of it as 'lock the verb in.' Whether the meaning is 'want,' 'plan to,' or 'must' is decided by context: 我要买 (I want to buy / I'm going to buy), 我们要走了 (we're about to leave), 你要小心 (you need to be careful). One word, three flavors. The negation depends on the flavor — that's where most learner mistakes start.
Examples
我要喝水。
Wǒ yào hē shuǐ.
I want to drink some water.
明天我要去北京。
Míngtiān wǒ yào qù Běijīng.
Tomorrow I'm going to Beijing.
学中文要每天练习。
Xué Zhōngwén yào měitiān liànxí.
Learning Chinese requires daily practice.
Common Mistake
Learners negate 要 with 不要 in every case, meaning 'don't want.' But 不要 is mostly used for COMMANDS ('don't do that'), not statements of preference. To say 'I don't want to,' use 不想; to say 'I don't have to,' use 不用.
我不要去北京。
我不想去北京。
Don't Confuse With
想 + Verb
Use 想 for soft wishes and thoughts ('I'd like to / I'm thinking of'). 要 is stronger and firmer — closer to a decision or plan.
会 + Verb
Use 会 for learned ability or a neutral prediction ('I can / it will happen'). 要 expresses the subject's intent or obligation, not capability.
得 (děi) + Verb
Use 得 for an obligation you can't avoid ('I gotta'). 要 in the obligation sense is closer to 'need to / am supposed to,' a little less heavy than 得.
