Verb + 一 + Verb
Reach for this when you want to soften an action and make it sound brief, casual, or tentative — 'have a quick look,' 'think about it a bit,' 'give it a try.' Doubling the verb with 一 in the middle (看一看, 想一想, 试一试) signals 'do it just a little, no big deal.' It's the most native-sounding way to invite someone to do something without sounding demanding.
Structure
[VERB] 一 [SAME VERB] (OBJECT)
verb + yī + same verb (e.g. kàn yi kàn, xiǎng yi xiǎng — yi is usually neutral tone)
How to Think About It
Verb reduplication with 一 is about softening, not repeating. '看看' and '看一看' mean the same thing — 'take a quick look' — and both downplay the action. In speech, the 一 is often pronounced in neutral tone and almost swallowed. Reach for it when you want to sound polite ('请你想一想'), playful ('我们试一试吧'), or unhurried ('让我看一看'). Only single-character verbs work cleanly with the 一 form; two-character verbs use the AB-AB pattern (考虑考虑) instead.
Examples
你来看一看这个。
Nǐ lái kàn yi kàn zhège.
Come have a look at this.
让我想一想。
Ràng wǒ xiǎng yi xiǎng.
Let me think about it for a moment.
你试一试这个新方法。
Nǐ shì yi shì zhège xīn fāngfǎ.
Give this new method a try.
Common Mistake
Learners apply 一 reduplication to two-character verbs and write '考虑一考虑' or '学习一学习.' That structure is ungrammatical. Two-character verbs reduplicate as AB-AB ('考虑考虑') without inserting 一.
我们考虑一考虑这个问题。
我们考虑考虑这个问题。
Don't Confuse With
Verb + Verb (without 一)
Same meaning, slightly more casual. '看看' and '看一看' are interchangeable in feel; the 一 form is just a touch fuller-sounding. Both soften the action.
Verb + 一下
Also softens an action ('看一下' = 'have a look'). Almost interchangeable with 看一看, but 一下 sounds slightly more action-oriented and 看一看 slightly more contemplative. Either works for polite requests.
Verb + 了 + Verb
'看了看' is past-tense reduplication — 'glanced briefly.' Use 了 in the middle when reporting that someone did the brief action; use 一 when inviting or describing in present/general terms.
