X 就是 / 才 ...
Reach for these when you want to put extra weight on what comes next. 就是 means 'precisely / exactly is' — it confirms emphatically. 才 means 'only then / it's only that' — it narrows the focus to one thing that really counts. Both push a clause from neutral statement into something that feels decisive. Common in punchy one-liners: '不知道才有意思' ('not knowing is what makes it interesting'), '看到了,就是看到了' ('if you saw it, you saw it — full stop').
Structure
[CLAUSE] 就是 / 才 [EMPHASIZED PART]
jiùshì / cái
How to Think About It
就是 doubles down on equality — 'this IS that, no wiggle room.' 才 narrows — 'only this counts, nothing else does.' They're not interchangeable: 就是 says 'YES, exactly that'; 才 says 'ONLY that.' In '不知道才有意思,' 才 means 'precisely not knowing — and nothing else — is what makes it interesting.' Swap to 就是 and the sentence becomes 'not knowing is what makes it interesting' — still strong, but it loses the 'only' shade.
Examples
不知道才有意思。
Bù zhīdào cái yǒu yìsi.
Not knowing is what makes it interesting.
看到了,就是看到了。
Kàndào le, jiùshì kàndào le.
If you saw it, you saw it. Period.
他就是我哥哥。
Tā jiùshì wǒ gēge.
He IS my older brother. (the one you were asking about)
Common Mistake
Learners use 才 when they mean 'just' or 'also' (English 'I just got here'). In Mandarin, that's 刚 (just now) or 也 (also). 才 in this emphasizer role means 'only THIS does the job' — using it loosely makes sentences feel oddly restrictive.
我才到这里。 (meaning: I just arrived)
我刚到这里。
Don't Confuse With
才 [TIME/QUANTITY]
'Only / not until' — 'I didn't sleep until 2am' / 'only three people came.' That 才 is about timing/quantity falling short of expectation. The emphasizer 才 in this pattern points to the one thing that really counts.
就 [VERB]
'Then / soon / right away' — sequencing or speed marker. Different role from the emphasizer 就是. Don't confuse 就 in '我就来' (I'm coming right now) with 就是 sealing an emphatic claim.
是 (plain copula)
Plain 是 just identifies ('这是水' = 'this is water'). 就是 adds emphasis ('这就是水' = 'this is EXACTLY water, what you've been asking about'). Use plain 是 to name; use 就是 to underline.
