现在...不一样了

How to Think About It
一样 means 'the same.' 不一样 negates it. The 了 at the end is the crucial change-of-state marker — it tells the listener 'previously it WAS the same, but now it isn't anymore.' Drop the 了 and the sentence becomes a flat comparison ('now it's not the same') with no sense of recent change. Drop 现在 and you lose the temporal anchor.

Common Mistake
Learners often forget the sentence-final 了 because there's no English equivalent. Without it, the sentence loses the 'something has changed' feeling and sounds like a neutral comparison. The 了 is what makes this pattern emotional and narrative.

以前...现在...
Explicit before-vs-now contrast where you spell out both sides. Use 现在...不一样了 when the past is implied and you only need to flag the change.
变了
'(It) changed' — describes the transformation directly. 现在...不一样了 emphasizes comparison with a prior state, not the change itself.
跟以前不一样
Spells out what it's different FROM ('different from before'). 现在...不一样了 leaves the comparison implicit and adds the change-of-state 了.
