只有...才...
Reach for this when you want to say 'only if X, then and only then Y.' 只有努力, 才能成功. (Only by working hard can you succeed.) The first clause states a NECESSARY condition — without it, the result is impossible. Used for rules, prerequisites, and earned outcomes: only adults can vote, only by practicing can you improve, only with this key can the door open.

How to Think About It
只有 is the gate; 才 is the late opening. 才 carries a sense of 'not until / only then' — the result is delayed and dependent. Compare 只要...就 (low bar, easy trigger) vs 只有...才 (high bar, must clear it first). If you can replace 'only if' in English with 'only by/with' and the sentence still works, you almost always want 只有...才....

Common Mistake
Learners pair 只有 with 就 because both feel like 'then.' But 就 means 'right away / easily,' which conflicts with the strict-requirement feel of 只有. Always use 才 — its 'not until' meaning matches 只有's gatekeeping.

Don't Confuse With
只要...就...
只要 = sufficient condition (this is ENOUGH, easy threshold). 只有 = necessary condition (this is REQUIRED, no exceptions). Same English 'only if,' opposite logic. Ask: is this an easy promise or a strict prerequisite?
除非...才...
除非 = 'unless' — frames the same idea from the negative side. '除非你道歉, 否则我才原谅你' is awkward; pair 除非 with 否则/不然 instead. Use 只有...才... when stating the positive condition.
必须
必须 = 'must' — a modal verb on a single clause. 只有...才... is a two-clause structure linking requirement to result. If you just want to say 'you must do X,' use 必须; if 'only by doing X will Y happen,' use 只有...才....
