What does 中间 mean?

中间 (zhōngjiān) is a position noun meaning 'the middle,' 'in between,' or 'among.'

Use it for physical center (the middle of a room, between two buildings) and for figurative middle ground (between two events, among a group). The standard pattern is A B 中间 — '(in) between A and B' — or 中间 ('in the middle of …'). Two differences from English. First, 中间 is a noun, not a preposition: you put it after the noun phrase it modifies, not before.

'Between the table and the chair' is 桌子和椅子中间, not 中间桌子和椅子. Second, for the abstract 'middle of a process' (middle of the meeting, middle of the night), Chinese often prefers alone (会议中, 半夜) rather than 中间. 中间 is most natural for spatial 'middle.'
