中文

中文 (Zhōngwén) is the standard noun for 'the Chinese language,' covering both spoken Mandarin and written Chinese. Native speakers use it for everything from 'speak Chinese' (说中文) to 'a Chinese book' (中文书). Two distinctions matter for learners. First, 中文 vs 汉语 (Hànyǔ): 汉语 literally means 'the Han people's language' and is more academic — used in linguistics, textbooks, and the HSK exam name (汉语水平考试).

中文 is more everyday and often emphasizes the written form (文 means 'writing'). In daily conversation, both are interchangeable. Second, 中文 specifically refers to standard Mandarin or written Chinese; for dialects, use the dialect name (上海话, 广东话). The capital Z in pinyin reflects that 中 stands for 'China,' a proper noun.
