太 + Adjective + 了
Reach for this when you want to express strong feeling about a quality — 'so/too [adjective]!' It's the go-to exclamation in Chinese. 太 ('too / so') sits in front of the adjective and 了 closes the clause with a satisfying punch. Use it for praise (太好了 — awesome!), complaint (太贵了 — too expensive), surprise, frustration. Spoken or written, it's everywhere.
Structure
太 [ADJ] 了
tài [ADJ] le
How to Think About It
Both 太 and 了 are required — this is a fixed bracket. 太...了 is the exclamation frame; 太 alone (without 了) sounds incomplete or only partially formed. The 了 at the end is not the past-tense 了 — here it marks the speaker's reaction, like an exclamation point. Without 了, you're describing; with 了, you're emoting.

Common Mistake
Learners drop 了 and just say '太 + Adj,' especially when translating 'too expensive' word for word. The 了 is what makes the exclamation sound natural; without it, the sentence feels clipped or unfinished.
这件衣服太贵。
这件衣服太贵了。
Don't Confuse With
很 + Adjective
很 is neutral, flat description. 太...了 is emotional, exclamatory. Use 很 for facts, 太...了 for reactions.
非常 + Adjective
非常 ('extremely') is strong but neutral; describes objectively. 太...了 implies a personal feeling or judgment, often with a hint of 'too much.'
真 + Adjective
真 ('really') adds sincerity to a description — '真好' (really nice). Less exclamatory than 太...了. Pick 真 for genuine emphasis, 太...了 for strong feeling.
很 + Adjective
很 + adj is neutral description ('他很高' = 'he is tall'). 太 + adj + 了 is exclamatory or excessive ('他太高了' = 'he's so tall / too tall').
非常 + Adjective
非常 = 'extremely,' factual emphasis. 太...了 carries emotion — surprise, praise, complaint. Pick by whether you want fact or feeling.
