在 + Verb
Reach for 在 + Verb to say an action is happening right now. It's Mandarin's everyday present-continuous marker — '他在唱歌' is 'he's singing.' Drop 在 directly before the verb, no other tense marker needed. You can stretch it to 正在 + Verb for extra immediacy or tag 呢 onto the end for a softer feel, but plain 在 + Verb is the workhorse you'll meet in conversation, narration, and news reporting from sentence one. To negate, use 没在 (he's not currently doing it).

How to Think About It
在 + Verb pins the verb to RIGHT NOW. The character 在 also means 'at' for locations (我在家 = I'm at home), but when it sits directly in front of a verb, it switches roles entirely and becomes a tense marker. The trick is: 在 + Noun = location, 在 + Verb = in-progress action. Crucially, 在 + Verb is incompatible with the completion marker 了 — pick whichever matches the timeline you mean.
Examples
他在打电话。
Tā zài dǎ diànhuà.
He's on the phone.
我们在吃晚饭。
Wǒmen zài chī wǎnfàn.
We're eating dinner.
孩子们在公园里玩。
Háizimen zài gōngyuán lǐ wán.
The kids are playing at the park.
Common Mistake
Learners pair 在 + Verb with 了, getting confused between ongoing and completed action. 在 says the action is unfolding right now; 了 says it has finished. They can't coexist on the same verb in the same clause.
他们在吃了饭。
他们在吃饭。
Don't Confuse With
正在 + Verb
Use 正在 to underline 'at this very moment.' Plain 在 is enough for any ongoing action; 正在 adds urgency or precision.
Verb + 着
Use 着 for a sustained STATE (窗户开着 = the window is open). 在 + Verb is for ACTION in motion, not steady states.
在 + Place
Use 在 + place noun (我在公司) to state location. 在 + verb means a different thing entirely — what follows decides the meaning.
