变得 + Adjective
Reach for 变得 when you want to describe a change in state — became taller, got hotter, turned expensive. 变 means 'to change,' and 得 here connects it to the adjective showing what the change resulted in. Use it whenever something is now different from how it used to be. Distinct from simply being ADJ: 很高 = 'is tall'; 变得很高 = 'became tall.' How to Think About It
变得 carries movement: there's an implied 'before' and 'after.' Without 变得, you're describing a state; with 变得, you're describing a transition into that state. Compare 中国发展很快 ('China develops quickly') with 中国变得很发达 ('China has become developed') — the second highlights the change. The 得 here works like the manner 得, linking the change to its result.

Common Mistake
Learners try to use 变 alone before an adjective and produce ungrammatical sentences. 变 needs 得 to connect to an adjective; 变 by itself is used with nouns (变成老师) or stands alone (世界变了).
天气变热了。 (acceptable but limited) → with a longer adjective: 天气变非常热了。

Don't Confuse With
变成 + Noun
变成 changes into a different THING ('became a teacher,' 'turned into a frog'). 变得 changes in QUALITY ('became taller,' 'got hotter').
越来越 + Adjective
越来越 says the trait is gradually intensifying ('more and more X'). 变得 just says the state has changed, without implying a gradient.
Adjective + 了
贵了 ('it got expensive') is shorter and often sufficient. 变得贵 emphasizes the change as a process; 贵了 just notes the new state. Use 变得 for bigger or more deliberate transformations.
