把 + Object + Verb
Reach for 把 when you want to say what someone did to a specific thing — what happened to it, where it ended up, what changed about it. 把 picks the object up and puts it in front of the verb so the verb can carry a result, a destination, or a complement that tells you how the object was disposed of. It's the disposal construction, and it's almost always paired with a verb plus something extra (了, 完, 到, 在, an adjective complement).
Structure
[SUBJECT] 把 [OBJECT] [VERB] [RESULT/COMPLEMENT]
bǎ [OBJECT] [VERB]...
How to Think About It
把 is a spotlight, not a verb. It tells the listener 'this thing is about to get acted on — pay attention to what happens to it.' That's why a bare verb after 把 sounds incomplete: if you bother to flag the object, you must also say what happened. The object after 把 also has to be definite — a specific, known thing, not 'some' or 'a.'
Examples
我把书放在桌子上了。
Wǒ bǎ shū fàng zài zhuōzi shàng le.
I put the book on the table.
他把咖啡喝完了。
Tā bǎ kāfēi hē wán le.
He finished drinking the coffee.
请把窗户打开。
Qǐng bǎ chuānghu dǎkāi.
Please open the window.
Common Mistake
Learners use 把 with a bare verb and nothing after. 把 demands a result, complement, or aspect marker — without one the sentence feels chopped off, like saying 'I took the cup put' in English.
我把门关。
我把门关上了。
Don't Confuse With
Subject + Verb + Object (SVO)
Stick with plain SVO when you're just naming an action ('I read a book'). Switch to 把 only when you need to highlight what happened to a specific object.
被 + Agent + Verb (passive)
被 makes the object the subject and tells you who acted on it. 把 keeps the actor as subject and fronts the object. Same disposal idea, opposite spotlight.
将 + Object + Verb
将 is the literary/formal twin of 把. Use 把 in speech and most writing; 将 belongs in news and formal text.
