把 + Object + Verb + Direction/Result
Reach for this whenever you want to say 'do something TO this specific thing, with a clear result.' 把 grabs the object out of the back of the sentence and parks it in front of the verb, so the listener can see exactly what's getting handled. The verb almost always carries a direction (上, 下, 起来, 进去) or a result complement (好, 完, 干净) — that tail is what tells you where the object ended up.
Structure
[SUBJECT] 把 [OBJECT] [VERB] [DIRECTION / RESULT]
bǎ [OBJECT] [VERB] [DIR / RESULT]
How to Think About It
把 sets up a mini-movie: you take the object, you do something to it, and the tail of the verb tells you the final frame — where it went or what it became. '把书放在桌子上' = take the book, place it, final frame is ON the table. Without 把, you can still say it, but the object loses its spotlight and the action feels less complete. The result complement is the punchline: drop it and the sentence sounds half-finished.
Examples
把衣服挂起来。
Bǎ yīfu guà qǐlái.
Hang the clothes up.
他把蛋糕切成八块。
Tā bǎ dàngāo qiē chéng bā kuài.
He cut the cake into eight pieces.
我把书放在桌子上。
Wǒ bǎ shū fàng zài zhuōzi shàng.
I put the book on the table.
Common Mistake
Learners use 把 but leave the verb naked, copying English word order: '把书放' (put the book...) — the listener is waiting for WHERE. Always add direction or result. Also, the object after 把 must be specific — 'a book' won't fly, it has to be 'the book' or 'this book.'
请把衣服拿。
请把衣服拿下来。
Don't Confuse With
Subject + Verb + Object (basic SVO)
Plain SVO doesn't promise a specific result. '我放书' = I put a book (somewhere, vague). 把 forces a specific object AND a specific destination/outcome.
被 + Agent + Verb
Mirror image. 把 = active, subject acts on object. 被 = passive, subject receives the action. Same event, opposite camera.
给 + Recipient + Object
给 names who receives. 把 names what gets handled. They often combine: '把书给他' = take the book, give to him.
