不仅无法/不... 反而会...
Reach for this when you want to say something not only fails to achieve its goal, it actually produces the OPPOSITE result. 'Not only does it not help, it makes things worse.' Common in critique, op-eds, health writing, and any argument where you're warning that a well-intentioned action backfires. Stronger than plain 'doesn't work' — you're saying it actively damages.

How to Think About It
The pattern is a two-stage burn: 不仅 raises the expectation ('not only does it fail to X'), then 反而 swings the sentence the other way ('on the contrary, it Y'). The key word is 反而 — it signals a reversal against expectation, not just an addition. Replacing 反而 with 还 turns the sentence into a regular 'not only... but also...' and loses the counter-intuitive punch.

Common Mistake
Learners use 还 in place of 反而, which turns the sentence into a flat additive ('not only does it fail, it also...'). The whole point of the pattern is the reversal, and 还 doesn't carry that reversal force.

Don't Confuse With
不仅……而且……
Plain additive 'not only... but also...'. Both clauses point in the same direction. Use 反而 only when the second clause REVERSES the expectation set up by the first.
非但不……反而……
Very close in meaning — slightly more literary. 非但不 emphasizes negation more strongly; 不仅无法/不 is the more common conversational/news version.
结果……
Just means 'as a result...'. It states a consequence without the explicit reversal of expectation that 反而 brings. Pick 反而 when you want the irony, 结果 when you just want the outcome.
