...不可怕，...才可怕
Reach for this when you want to flip the listener's worry. You name the obvious thing they are afraid of, dismiss it, and then deliver the deeper thing that should actually scare them. It is a rhetorical move common in op-eds, motivational speech, and pointed essays — 'X isn't the real problem. Y is.' The 才 carries the punch: 'THAT is what's scary.'

How to Think About It
The whole pattern is a setup-and-payoff. The first clause is a feint — you concede the surface fear so the listener lowers their guard. Then 才 enters and says 'this, by contrast, is the real thing.' 才 here is the exclusive-emphasis 才: only THAT (and not the first thing) qualifies. The pattern can be templated with other adjectives too — ...不难，...才难; ...不贵，...才贵 — but the rhetorical purpose is identical: subvert the obvious.

穷不可怕，没有希望才可怕。

Being poor isn't scary — having no hope is what's scary.

Common Mistake
Learners drop 才 because the parallel structure looks complete without it. But without 才, the second clause becomes a flat statement (Y is scary) and loses the contrastive punch. 才 is what tells the listener 'THIS is the one that matters.'

Don't Confuse With
不是...而是...
Replaces a wrong claim with a correct one — 'not X but Y.' Use this for factual correction. ...不可怕，...才可怕 is rhetorical and emotional, not corrective.

Plain comparison — 'Y is scarier than X.' Use when both are scary and you just rank them. The ...不可怕，...才可怕 frame outright dismisses the first.
