并非……而是……
Use 并非……而是…… when you need to correct a wrong assumption and replace it with the right one — 'it's not A, but rather B.' It's the formal, written version of 不是……而是……, with 并非 carrying an emphatic, slightly literary tone of 'definitely not.' How to Think About It
并非……而是…… is a correction, not a contrast. The first half names a belief or claim the writer rejects; the second half states what is actually true. That's why both halves must describe the same subject from the same angle — you can't reject A about one thing and affirm B about another. The 并 in 并非 adds emphasis: 'it really isn't that.'

Common Mistake
Learners use 并非……而是…… in casual chat where it sounds stiff, or pair 并非 with 但是 instead of 而是. 并非 demands 而是 as its partner, and the whole structure belongs in formal or written register.

Don't Confuse With
不是……而是……
Same meaning, neutral register. Use 不是……而是…… in speech; switch to 并非……而是…… for essays and formal commentary.
不是……就是……
不是……就是…… means 'if not A, then B' — listing two possibilities. 并非……而是…… rejects A and asserts B, not 'A or B.'
虽然……但是……
Use 虽然……但是…… to concede one truth and assert another contrasting one. 并非……而是…… denies the first claim outright — it never accepts it.
不是...而是...
Same logic, neutral register. Use 不是...而是... in everyday speech and writing; reach for 并不/并非 when you want to push back against an assumption.
并不 + adjective
Standalone 'really not / by no means.' 这并不难 ('this isn't actually hard'). When followed by 而是, it sets up a correction; alone, it's just emphatic negation.
