并非
Reach for this when you want to negate something with weight — 'is by no means,' 'is not actually.' 并非 is the formal, slightly literary version of 不是. The 并 adds an undertone of 'contrary to what you might assume,' making it stronger than a plain negation. Common in opinion writing, news editorials, academic papers, and formal speech. In casual chat, just use 不是; reach for 并非 when you want to push back against an assumption with rhetorical force.
Structure
Subject + 并非 + Predicate (noun phrase or clause)
bìng fēi
How to Think About It
非 by itself means 'not' in classical Chinese — you still see it in 非常 ('not ordinary' → 'extraordinary' → 'very'). Adding 并 in front gives it a 'truly not / by no means' force, the kind of negation you'd use to correct a misconception. Think of it as the difference between English 'it's not X' (plain) and 'it is by no means X' (emphatic, formal). The thing being negated usually follows directly — no copula 是 needed.

不是
Plain everyday negation. 并非 is the formal/written upgrade. Use 不是 in conversation; switch to 并非 in essays or formal speeches.
并不
