如同……
Reach for this when you want a polished, literary simile — 'like' or 'as if.' 如同 is the formal cousin of 像 and 像……一样, used heavily in essays, news features, and descriptive prose. It introduces a vivid comparison that lets the writer paint a picture: 'the data hit them like cold water,' 'the deficit hangs over them like the sword of Damocles.' The comparison can stand alone (这如同晴天霹雳) or be followed by 一样 / 一般 for fuller cadence (如同……一样).

How to Think About It
如同 lifts the register — it asks the reader to slow down and picture the comparison. Where 像 in speech just notes a resemblance, 如同 in writing performs it: B is offered as an image the reader is meant to dwell on. That's why it pairs naturally with strong metaphors (cold water, swords, dark clouds) rather than mundane likenesses. Using 如同 for everyday similarities sounds overwrought.

Common Mistake
Learners reach for 如同 in casual speech, where it lands stiff and bookish. Used to say 'my hair is like my mom's,' it sounds like reading from a novel. Reserve 如同 for writing and reach for 像 or 像……一样 when speaking.

Everyday conversational simile. Use 像……一样 in speech and ordinary writing; switch to 如同 for literary or formal register.
好像……

犹如……
Near-identical formal cousin to 如同, even more literary. Both work in essays; 如同 is the slightly more common choice in modern writing.
