Drop 相比之下 at the start of a clause when you want to pivot from one situation to a contrasting one — 'by comparison,' 'in contrast.' It assumes the first situation has already been described and now you're flipping to the other side: 'Team A struggled. 相比之下, Team B looked relaxed.' It's a workhorse transition in news writing, analysis, and any context where you're holding two things up side by side. Always sits at the very front of its clause, set off by a comma.

How to Think About It
Read it character by character: 相比 'comparing,' 之下 'under (this).' The whole phrase means 'under that comparison.' It's a hinge — the first clause supplies the thing being compared against, and 相比之下 swivels the camera to whatever stands out by contrast. You almost never use it without something already on the table; pulling it out cold sounds like the listener missed the setup.

Common Mistake
Learners try to wedge 相比之下 in the middle of a sentence or after the subject, treating it like English 'by comparison' which is flexible. In Chinese it's locked to clause-initial position, followed by a comma.

Don't Confuse With
和 [X] 相比
Names the specific thing being compared to ('compared to X'). Use 相比之下 when the reference point was already mentioned and doesn't need repeating.
反而
Marks an unexpected reversal ('on the contrary'). 相比之下 just contrasts two things neutrally — no surprise implied.
然而
General-purpose 'however' for any contrast. 相比之下 specifically frames the contrast as a side-by-side comparison.
