非但……反而……
Use this when the expected result didn't happen — and the opposite one did. 非但 sets up a negation of the expected outcome; 反而 flips to the surprising, contrary one. It carries genuine astonishment, the 'I thought X would happen, instead Y did' feeling. Reach for it in writing and formal speech: news commentary, essays, op-eds. In casual chat, 不但没……反而…… does the same job.

How to Think About It
Think of it as a U-turn marker. 非但 is the brake on the expected path; 反而 is the steering wheel cranked the opposite way. The pattern requires that the second clause be the actual opposite of the first — not just different. If the contrast isn't sharp enough to surprise the reader, use 而且 or 还 instead.

感觉非但没有错过什么重要大事，反而心情平静了很多。
Gǎnjué fēidàn méiyǒu cuòguò shénme zhòngyào dàshì, fǎn'ér xīnqíng píngjìng le hěn duō.
It felt like I hadn't missed anything important; on the contrary, I was much calmer.

Common Mistake
Learners drop the 没 inside the first clause, treating 非但 like 不但 (which means 'not only'). But 非但 almost always pairs with 没/不 + the expected outcome, because the whole point is that the expected thing failed to happen.
他非但努力工作，反而被老板批评了。
他非但没有偷懒，反而比谁都努力，结果还是被老板批评了。
Don't Confuse With
不但……反而……
Same meaning, slightly less formal. 不但没……反而…… is the everyday spoken version; 非但 is the news-and-essay register.
不但……而且……
而且 adds in the same direction ('not only X, also Y'). 反而 reverses direction ('not X, but the opposite Y'). Picking the wrong one wrecks the logic.
却……
却 marks a single mid-sentence contrast. 非但……反而…… is a stronger two-part frame for unexpected outcomes.
